About

Ahmed Knowmadic Ali

From Refugee to Poet Laureate — A Journey of Voice, Resilience, and Purpose

Somali-Canadian Poet | Educator | Civic Leader | Canadian Spoken Word Champion

Biography

Ahmed Knowmadic Ali is an award-winning Somali-Canadian poet, educator, and civic leader. Born in Mogadishu in 1984, his early life was defined by displacement—fleeing the Somali Civil War to Italy before immigrating to Canada in 1992. Edmonton became the first place I touched ground, igniting a lifelong commitment to voice, belonging, and community building.

The 2011 Canadian Spoken Word Champion and Edmontons 7th Poet Laureate (2017-2019), Ahmed uses poetry as a strategic pedagogical tool to cultivate critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and student agency. Over 15 years, he has engaged 3,000+ students through 200+ curriculum-aligned workshops and multi-week school residencies across Canada, the United States, and the UK.

The Knowmadic Philosophy

The moniker Knowmadic is more than a stage name—its a pedagogical framework. A deliberate portmanteau of knowledge and nomadic, the name synthesizes the stability of the intellectual with the fluidity of the wanderer.

This duality defines Ahmeds work: he operates as a Cultural Bridge-Builder, translating the Somali immigrant experience for Canadian policymakers, and conversely, translating institutional complexity for marginalized youth. He is radical enough to critique systems of power, yet institutional enough to be trusted with a microphone at government galas.

Major Achievements

Canadian Spoken Word Champion (2011)

Ahmed won the Canadian Spoken Word Championship—a national poetry slam competition featuring the countrys best performers. The victory validated that his voice, his story, his artistry could resonate beyond Edmontons local scene.

Edmonton Poet Laureate (2017-2019)

In July 2017, Ahmed was appointed Edmontons 7th Poet Laureate—a civic honour recognizing his contributions to the citys literary culture. During his two-year tenure, Ahmed spoke before City Council on arts funding, created international poet exchange programs, and advocated for bringing the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word to Edmonton.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor of Arts, Philosophy — Grant MacEwan University
  • Diploma, Comedy Writing and Performance — Humber College
  • Spoken word mentorship within Edmontons arts community
  • Traditional Somali oral poetry (cultural transmission)

This unique combination—philosophical rigor plus comedic timing plus poetic artistry—creates the Sage-Jester archetype: Ahmed disarms audiences with humor before delivering serious socio-political critique.

Civic Engagement and Leadership

Ahmed represents a paradox: the nomad who stays and builds. His governance portfolio includes:

  • Law Enforcement Review Board of Alberta (Board Member)
  • Edmonton Arts Council (Board Member and Equity Committee Chair)
  • National Council of Canadian Muslims (Advisor)
  • Sahaba Mosque, Edmonton (Board Member)

These roles are not distractions from his art—they are extensions of it. Ahmeds poetry critiques power; his governance work restructures it.
